Time Period Post Civil War, Pre Secret Invasion

General Bio Anthony Stark's childhood was...troubled to say the least. Son of legendary weapons designer and abusive drunk Howard Stark, Tony was expected to follow in his father's footsteps, even though Tony himself wanted nothing of the sort. So Howard forced his son into a strict boarding school to toughen him up and teach him some discipline. While a genius in his own right (graduating from M.I.T. at the age of seventeen), Tony spent much of his early life partying and boozing it up, giving him the reputation of a notorious playboy. He did take over the company after his parents died in a car wreck, but still had no savvy of a businessman, relying on his secretary Pepper Potts to do most of the work. It wasn't until a fateful trip to Vietnam/Afghanistan (depending on what decade you're reading from) that he began to turn his life around.
While observing a weapons test, Tony was injured by one of his own land mines. Found by terrorists, he was kept alive only so he could build weapons for his captors. With the help of another prisoner, Ho Yinsen, Tony builds an magnetized chest plate to keep shrapnel from the bomb from piercing his heart, leading way to completing the rest of the suit of armor. While Yinsen dies in the escape, Tony is able to make it out of the camp. He eventually makes it back to the States with the help of Marine pilot Jim Rhodes. He resolves to not let the second chance Yinsen gave him to go to waste and decides to fight crime as Iron Man, claiming the Armored Avenger was his bodyguard.
During his time as Iron Man, Tony has fought countless supervillains, co-founded the superhero team The Avengers, beaten alcoholism (twice), help found the international peacekeeping organization S.H.I.E.L.D., met King Arthur and Merlin, had his company stolen out from under him twice, been shot and paralyzed, been named Secretary of Defense, had at least two dozen heart attacks, four heart transplants (though to be fair, the last one was less of a transplant and more of regrowing the thing. Long story), and has died at least three times. Within recent years, he's injected himself with an experimental nanite virus that allows him to control computers with his mind, started a civil war between the superheroes, become Director of S.H.I.E.L.D., and blasted the Hulk into space. Currently, he is one of the most hated men within the superhuman community in the Marvel U.
Due to being mind controlled on several occasions, troubles with his addiction and a few daddy issues, Tony has major control issues. He has a habit of trying to manipulate those around him because he has no control over his own life. He also carries around a tremendous amount of guilt, each and every one of the lives he's taken or failed weighing heavily on him, most notably that of his good friend and bodyguard Happy Hogan and that of fellow Avenger *coughandsecretgaycrushcough* Steve Rogers, aka Captain America, both of whom were killed during the superheroes' civil war.
